Preparation: Before starting, the engine should be inspected to ensure that all parts are working properly. Check the water level, fuel level and oil level and make sure there are no leaks.

Lighting the boiler: The firebox is lit to heat the water in the boiler. Once the water reaches the desired temperature, the steam pressure increases.

Lubrication: The moving parts of an engine must be regularly lubricated to prevent wear and tear.

Starting a locomotive: After steam pressure builds up, the throttle is opened to allow steam to enter the cylinders, which drive the wheels of the locomotive.

Controlling speed: The speed of the locomotive is controlled by throttle and steam pressure. The engineer should monitor the pressure gauge to ensure that the pressure is maintained at a safe level.

Braking: To slow or stop the engine, the engineer uses brakes, which are applied by reducing the steam pressure in the cylinders.

Stopping the locomotive: Once the locomotive reaches its destination, the fire is extinguished and the boilers are allowed to cool. The locomotive is then inspected and maintained for the next journey.

Operating a steam engine requires skill and experience and all safety protocols must be followed to prevent accidents.
